Modernisation of the energy sector with a grant from the Théta 2 programme

The energy industry has been undergoing dynamic changes in recent years, making it one of the fastest evolving sectors. There are clear trends in the market to boost renewable energy production and to promote innovative energy solutions.

We would therefore like to introduce the Théta 2 subsidy programme, which is provided by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and has just been announced.

This subsidy programme focuses on the transformation and innovation of the energy industry. It aims to transition to sustainable and efficient energy sources, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen energy security. The focus is not only on developing renewable energy sources, but also on upgrading existing infrastructure and implementing advanced technologies that will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

If you would also like to contribute to the overall modernisation of the energy sector, this programme is an opportunity to reduce the considerable research and development costs of your project.

For example, you can fund research and development of new technologies that improve the efficiency and reliability of energy production, transmission and distribution, as well as other research and development activities.

Who can apply for funding

Theta 2 supports a wide range of activities from basic research to applied development, enabling collaboration between research institutions, universities and industry.

Thus, companies of all sizes and research organisations can apply, either in effective cooperation or on their own.

What the grant can fund

  • salaries of researchers, technicians and other professionals, including scholarships
  • tools, instruments and equipment for the duration of the project
  • subcontracting, contract research
  • other costs, e.g. materials, travel, protection of industrial property rights, patents, licences…

How much can be obtained

The maximum rate of subsidy is up to 90% of the eligible project costs.

The call for proposals has a total of 3 sub-programmes:

Sub-programme 1, Research in the Public Interest, focuses on key trends in the energy sector such as decarbonisation, decentralisation, digitalisation and democratisation. At the same time, this sub-programme will focus on interdisciplinary technical areas such as the interaction and interconnection of energy with other sectors.

Sub-programme 2, Energy Technologies for Competitiveness, aims to support technologies and solutions with rapid application in practice that will contribute to meeting the climate, energy and environmental objectives of the Czech Republic. Support will focus on both traditional and new areas of research and development.

Sub-programme 3, Technologies to ensure long-term sustainability of the energy sector, focuses on supporting technologies and solutions which are at a lower stage of technological readiness at the time of project proposal and which are not expected to be quickly put into practice, on the contrary, they are intended to support new solutions in industrial innovation.

Example of a supported project:

An energy management company received a grant to develop new technology for smart buildings.

The result, a unique solution in the form of a flexible microgrid concept , will integrate renewable energy sources into the electricity grid, store energy and charge electric vehicles. The technology will enable communication, management and control in the electrical distribution system primarily in residential buildings, but also in other types of buildings.

The grant helped fund operational costs such as development staff salaries, materials and overheads, both for the company and the collaborating university.
